The Weather Channel showed radar images of the "monster storm", Hurricane Andrew. The year was 1992 and Hearts With Hands was born!
As reports grew of the devastation reached our televisions, the unbelievable picture touched our hearts. Food and supplies donated by local government authorities sat unattended and exposed to the elements in parking lots where buildings once stood.
Afternoon rains were rapidly destroying what was left. Hearts With Hands arrived with a portable warehouse; a large blue tent, 300 feet long and 130 feet wide. In the first 48 hours we unloaded 16 semi-trailers of food and water from Western North Carolina.Almost ten years later, Hearts With Hands has helped to ease the shock of disaster and the pain of suffering families. Our mission included the Oklahoma City bombing (1995),, Hurricane Fran relief on Topsail Island, North Carolina (1996), the Birmingham, Alabama tornadoes (1998), the F-5 tornadoes of Oklahoma, and the massive hurricane Mitch that slammed Honduras. There we supplied enough food for 30 feeding stations. We also chartered a plane to fly Christmas boxes to the children.In 1999, we went to work in our state when hurricane Floyd put one-third of North Carolina under water. Hearts With Hands delivered 50 semi-trailer loads of food and water to people in desperate need of relief.As we continue to assist the needy throughout the world, Cuba is now a large part of our international focus. In July, three more containers of medical supplies and equipment were shipped to Havana. We are excited, yet sensitive about this special opportunity to assist the needy of Cuba.Lean, efficient and quick response enables us to fill the gap between state and federal agencies. We don't need an on site office. There is a church or synagogue in each town where we work. We just need the equipment and supplies to change lives and a place for volunteers to work.The past ten years have shown our willingness and ability to assist in disasters and provide relief to those in need. As we enter the future, our vision is clear, our purpose is defined, and our mission continues. Our obligation to provide assistance, relieve suffering, and improve lives of those in need grows with each impending threat of disaster. You can help by easing the suffering of the children affected by the next disaster, by relieving the immediate needs of those internationally, and by helping those faced with personal disasters locally.As each disaster touches our heart, allow it to touch yours.
