Coke Cares - Asheville- Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated (CCBC) located on Clayton Road in Skyland collected over 2,000 pounds of food and delivered it to Hearts With Hands for its Bakpak Bunch™ program. The food drive is a result of the Coca-Cola national community stewardship program entitled “Coke Cares.” Sherry Cook, Office Assistant at the Clayton Road facility acted as spokesperson for the group and did a taped interview with local ABC affiliate, WLOS. Hearts With Hands Executive Director Bill Bradley stated, “Hearts With Hands is extremely grateful for the donation and the “Coke Cares” program is a natural fit with the work Hearts With Hands is doing throughout western North Carolina. We look forward to partnering with these fine folks on many of our established programs.” The following associates were instrumental in making the food drive a huge success along with other members of the stewardship committee of CCBCC.

Preparing for Hurricane Season - June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season, and according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) officials, predictions are for a normal hurricane season producing between nine and fourteen named storms. Four to seven of these may become hurricanes, and one to three which will actually be categorized as major hurricanes, which is a Category Three or higher.
Unfortunately the increase in local demand for food and other supplies needed during disasters has left Hearts With Hands’ reserves critically low. According to Bill Bradley, Executive Director of Hearts With Hands, “If we begin now organizing drives to obtain the food and supplies needed, we should be ready in August when the season traditionally becomes more active.” Bradley is asking churches, other organizations, and businesses to collect food and relief supplies or to make a financial donation to help prepare for the season.
Hearts With Hands, Inc. is collecting donations of the following items to prepare for the upcoming season:
- bottled water
- first aid supplies
- non perishable foods
- energy drinks
- baby formula/foods
- diapers/wipes
- convenience-type foods
- tarps and plastic sheeting
- paper goods
- picnic supplies
- No used clothing, please.
